Five Common Things Contributing To Failed Starters

When a car fails to start, there are several possible reasons. Maybe your car has run out of battery or fuel, or maybe you’re dealing with a clogged spark plug or a broken ignition switch. Maybe it is the starter itself that has failed. Any failure with the starter relay will stop the car from starting because that’s how power is sent to the starter motor. What contributes to a failed starter? Auto Solutions shares five things that should be considered when you are dealing with failed starters:

  1. Overheating: Issues with overheating in your car can cause the starter motor to overheat. One of the parts that can be damaged as a result of this is the solenoid. The solenoid, an important part of the starter, serves as a way for electric power to travel from the battery to the starter. Just like a defective solenoid, a defective starter motor can be brought about by overheating. The overheating of this part can mean that the electromagnet inside the motor is broken, so the starter motor must be replaced.
  2. Corrosion: If any electrical connections in the car are corroded, the starter motor will fail to receive any electrical current from the battery. Besides corroded battery terminals, there are other common electrical connections. These could include an undercharged or faulty battery, as well as a malfunctioning system component. The corrosion will only drain power from your battery and slow it down. At Tommy’s, our battery service includes removing and cleaning all of your battery terminals and connections.
  3. Poor Wiring: If any wires involved in the system have come loose, the starter might fail. If the wiring is faulty, the solenoid will not be supplied with an adequate amount of electricity needed to start the car. At Auto Solutions, we offer electrical diagnosis and repair, so we can repair your wiring and handle your starters. We can also handle alternators, batteries, modules, ECM, PCM, and BCM.
  4. Defective Parts: Even though many parts are involved with starting a car, it only takes one faulty part for the starter to fail. If any of the starter motor components are defective, they must be replaced immediately to prevent damage to the rest of the components. Problems can include the neutral safety switch, clutch safety switch, starter relay, starter solenoid, and other system components or connections in the starting circuit.
  5. Worn Down: If the starter motor is worn down, the car will not start as quickly or not even start at all. Failed starters can occur when the starter motors have been worn down for quite some time and are in dire need of a replacement. Similarly, if the gears’ teeth are worn down, grinding noises may occur, and further damage will be done to the starter. It’s always best to make sure that you’re repairing or replacing parts as need be, so get your car maintenance done with Auto Solutions.
